Dutch Elm Disease

Elm trees are one of the most common types of trees in the US. There are between 30 to 40 species of deciduous trees within the genus, and they’ve grown in popularity in the landscaping industry (and have for years). However, several species across the country are vulnerable to a disease called Dutch elm disease, which can kill trees within several years. To protect your elm trees from this ailment, contact a professional tree removal service for a comprehensive tree inspection and expert guidance.

At Timber Works Tree Care, our certified team of arborists handles all stages of tree removal services, including ones that involve weak, cracking, and rotting trees. We have knowledge and skill that you can rely on to determine the best course of action for your property. Moreover, we guarantee that your service will be completed safely and promptly—read our client testimonials to see if we’re a good fit for your project!

Below, we discuss Dutch elm disease further and what you can do to protect your property:

What is Dutch Elm Disease (DED)?

Dutch elm disease was first detected in the Netherlands in the 1920s. Since then, it has appeared in Europe, North America, and Asia. Oftentimes, it is found on species of elm and causes the afflicted trees to die within one to several years.

Dutch elm disease is caused by an exotic fungal pathogen, Ophiostoma novo-ulmi, which attracts elm bark beetles. These bugs will often feed on healthy elm trees before finding an individual dying elm tree to begin gallery and brood production.

The migration of elm bark beetles allows them to transmit Dutch elm disease to uninfected elm trees, continuing this cycle of growth and reproduction.

Signs & Symptoms

With this particular vascular wilt disease, some highly susceptible trees can die within a year. However, it progresses in other trees much more slowly, taking several years. Symptoms of Dutch elm disease include:

  • Dust around the tree’s base
  • Yellowing or wilting leaves
  • Brown, curling leaves and dying branches
  • Brown discoloration on the bark of the wood

What You Can Do To Protect Your Property

When you come across the above signs, schedule a tree inspection before removing them from your property. Sometimes these particular signs may indicate a different tree disease or issue, so enlist in the assistance of a professional tree work service first.

Once you have your tree inspection completed, your tree care provider will instruct you with the best course of action to take and if tree removal is needed. Seeking expert advice first will help you save more time and money in the long run, as well as give you peace of mind knowing your property is in good hands. Maybe even consider routine tree inspections to prevent existing problems from worsening.

Ben and his crew did an excellent job. Even though it was right next to our house and quite a large tree nothing was damaged. They cleaned up the yard too! I would highly recommend!
Response from the owner:Thank you very much for the business and kind review, Lisa!

Timber Works Tree Care did an excellent job removing a large cherry tree that was leaning dangerously over our "precious" family dogwood tree. The dogwood tree was very important to my family and could suffer no damage, so I watched the entire branch-by-branch tree removal process. Removal of every branch of the cherry tree was under the total control of the crew. Tree removal was done professionally, safely and efficiently. The Timber Works crew of JR, Ryan and Keoni, was respectful, courteous and totally professional. They chipped the cherry tree residue and cleaned up the entire work area. The price of the tree removal (and chipping the branches) was fair and reasonable. I would strongly recommend the Tree Works and the crew of JR, Ryan and Keoni.

We were having a patio put in in our backyard and to our surprise, during the excavation process, they ran into an old tree stump that we did not know existed and could now cause delays. After calling around and leaving messages, Timber Works office team answered. They were super nice and luckily had teams in the area still and I had someone at my house by thay afternoon. The best part was they could have the crew grind the stump the next afternoon! I was blown away by the absolutely amazing turnaround and didn't have to delay the work with our patio contractor. Highly highly recommend!
Timber Works Tree Care runs an excellent operation. I was impressed with the prompt and informative site assessment, seamless take down of a 6ft diameter locust, and courteous follow up. Thanks Timber Works.
